Ruth Roman is the youngest child born to Lithuanian as well as Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. After her father died in the role of a carnival barker as a little girl She was required to keep the family going by working as a cook and server. Ruth was raised in the poor Boston Tenement area in Massachusetts. She went to school there. She left the school she was attending just two years later in pursuit of acting as a profession. Her journey was not without obstacles. the path she chose to pursue. When she was in New York she was hired to take photos for a publication about crime, but no theatrical opportunities were offered. In New York, she was employed at a bar as an entry-point girl, before quitting before moving to Boston. There, she made ends meet with her ushering duties in the morning, while at night performing in the New England Repertory Company, the first job she had that was steady. She received a master's degree in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
